About Ann Seward

Becoming an animal portraitist was an accident. Wishing to have a picture of a horse to hang in her cottage, Ann borrowed her father's watercolour box and set about copying a photograph of a famous stallion. This was duly hung, but not for long. A visiting friend took a liking to the study, and purchased it. Ann set about painting a study of another stallion to fill the gap, which was again purchased by another friend.

A love of animals and the countryside gave her an intimate knowledge and perception, which proved invaluable as her artistic skills developed. Ann was now accepting commissions for horses, dogs and other animals from friends, when she was accepted by the CLA to take a trade stand at their 1979 Game Fair at Bowood. This resulted in sufficient commissions for her to leave the family firm and to set out on a full-time career as an animal portraitist.

Working for the last 28 years from her home studio in the town of Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire, England, Ann accepts private commissions for studies of dogs, horses and pets. However, the interest in her wildlife studies has led to the publication of a popular series of limited edition prints.

Ann exhibits her portraiture at a few selected shows nationally, usually with a sporting connotation. In 2001, at the invitation of the Countryside Alliance, Ann attended the French Game Fair at Chambord. Here much interest and admiration was shown in her work, and the resulting print sales and commissions have ensured that her reputation as one of the foremost animal portraitists in the country, has now reached international acclaim.
